"Plans are being made by many thousands of enthusiastic Republicans, and others, to head to lovely North Carolina in August".
Cooper has gradually eased business restrictions, with restaurants now allowed to offer limited indoor dining. But the governor, like other states, has stopped the lockdown, still banning gatherings at venues, bars and gyms.
" They [the Republicans] must be immediately given an answer by the Governor as to whether or not the space will be allowed to be fully occupied".
The president said he chose North Carolina, a battleground state, because "I do love that state and it would have been a flawless place for it, and it still will be".
Even prior to the health concerns of hosting a massive convention in Charlotte, the city's hosting of RNC was politically contentious.
Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper's administration has refused to give in, though, responding with a letter demanding a written safety plan from organizers of the Republican National Convention, slated for August in Charlotte.
Cooper, who has followed federal health guidelines in a phased reopening of his state, had told reporters earlier in the day that the health and safety of his citizens were paramount as North Carolina plans for the August 24-27 event.
Other states, like Georgia, have tweeted saying they would love to host the National Republican Convention.
North Carolina has seen a steady uptick in new Corona virus cases, as President Trump has called for a full-fledged Republican convention.
Now Texas Republicans are lobbying to move the convention here. In April, the City Council voted to accept a $50 million federal grant for convention security.
But if the state is still under strict regulations, it won't happen at all.
Republican officials say such a large event requires months of preparation, making it imperative they receive assurances.
During a subsequent Charlotte-area visit, Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar sounded less certain when discussing convention preparations. "And we have to know before we spend millions and millions of dollars on an arena to make it magnificent for the convention". Azar also praised Cooper's reopening moves.
Statewide, there were 24,000 cases as part of an upward trend that included 1,100 new cases Saturday, the state's worst daily increase yet. Monday's state tally includes about 750 deaths and 600 current hospitalizations. He has repeatedly said he wants to go forward with a traditional large-scale event, while Democrats are openly contemplating a significantly scaled-back version of the meeting to avoid the health risks posed by the pandemic. While Cooper has urged the federal government to provide more testing supplies and protective gear, he's avoided criticizing Trump by name.
It appears that Trump's comments were a jolt to the ongoing negotiations between state officials and Republicans. Cooper, who was narrowly elected in 2016, faces a challenge from Republican Lt. Gov. Dan Forest this year.
