Lee Cheuk Yan, the chairman of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China, said the "unreasonable" ban on this year's vigil means the end to Hong Kong's "one country, two systems". The US president said the Chinese government had been "diminishing the city's longstanding and very proud status".

The South China Morning Post has picked up on the escalating tensions between the U.S. and China. Under the terms of a China-Britain agreement, Hong Kong was to have enjoyed significant autonomy from the communist government in Beijing for 50 years, starting in 1997.
"It is said that we are becoming "one country, one system" and we've lost our autonomy", said Cheng.
China's parliament passed the laws last week in an effort to curb dissent.
In a strongly-worded speech on May 29, Trump decried Beijing's "absolute smothering" of Hong Kong's freedoms, rampant theft of American intellectual property, coverup of the CCP Virus outbreak, and influence over the World Health Organization (WHO). He also announced measures aimed at punishing China, the BBC reported. "I highly suspect that Hong Kong rioters have infiltrated American states", he wrote, earning him accusations of peddling conspiracy theories.
The Hong Kong government accused Trump and his administration of smearing and demonizing the government's duty to safeguard national security and called allegations that the security law would undermine individual freedoms "simply fallacious".
Hong Kong Secretary for Security John Lee also criticized the USA response, saying that the new law was in line with Hong Kong's mini-constitution, the Basic Law, and that he disapproved of the United States "using any measures to suppress or intimidate the officials of the SAR [special administrative region]".
Last year's gathering was especially large and came just a week before seven months of pro-democracy protests and clashes exploded onto the city's streets, sparked initially by a plan to allow extraditions to the authoritarian mainland.
"Many of us ... have deep ties to this city and with Hong Kong people".
Its shares rose almost 9% after it said it would be opening stores in coming weeks in response to loosening government lockdowns.
China has been the top source of foreign students to the United States for the past decade with almost 370,000 Chinese at U.S. universities, although Trump's order will not directly affect undergraduates.
Chinese state media have trolled the Trump administration over the protests and looting now raging across the US. "Why US denies China's right to restore peace and order in HK while brutally dispersing crowds at home?" said Dmitry Polyanskiy. Hong Kong serves as an intermediate trade hub for South Korean businesses to re-export to mainland China due to its low corporate tax, stable currency, proximity to mainland China and attractive trade infrastructure.
