Trump on Saturday announced that he had canceled the June meeting, which he had billed as a symbol of the United States "transitioning back to greatness", after German Chancellor Angela Merkel told him in a telephone call that she saw the summit in Washington as a health risk. Although it's the fifth-largest economy in the world, India is technically not a high economy country.
The meeting, originally scheduled for March, had been cancelled as the global pandemic took hold. The United States has more cases than any of the other members of the G-7: Germany, France, Japan, Italy, Canada and the United Kingdom.
U.S. -Australia ties have been strong, even though recent White House comments on the origins of the coronavirus outbreak have frustrated Australia's push for an independent inquiry, sources have told Reuters.
China was not among Mr Trump's proposed attendees - as tensions between Washington and Beijing run high over the pandemic and Hong Kong.
Trump said he does not "feel that as a G-7 it properly represents what's going on in the world", calling it a "very outdated group of countries". At an earlier virtual summit the leaders told Trump that medical firms must share and coordinate research on coronavirus vaccines rather than provide products exclusively to one country. "He is postponing it until September and plans to invite Russia, South Korea, Australia and India", the statement said. "As of today, considering the overall pandemic situation, she can not agree to her personal participation, to a journey to Washington", the spokesman said in a statement provided to The Washington Post.
Trump has been over the weeks suggesting that there is "no greater example" of reopening amid the COVID-19 pandemic than holding an in-person G7 summit in America by the end of June. Australia would welcome an official invitation. I think a good time would be before the election, he said. "Donald Trump is being true to himself in pursuing an agenda against multilateralism and concertation", Badie said.
"Russia was removed from the G7 group of nations following its (2014) annexation of Crimea and we are yet to see evidence of changed behavior which would justify its readmittance ..."
While Trump on Saturday also floated the possibility of holding the gathering after November's election, such a meeting could conflict with the G20 summit scheduled for mid-November in Riyadh. The work is more important now as virus-hit countries struggle to fix the damage.
