A representative for Ennio Morricone, his lawyer Giorgio Assumma, said that he had deteriorated at a hospital after falling and breaking his leg.
Morricone scored more than 500 films over the course of his illustrious 50-plus year career, including John Carpenter's The Thing, Brian De Palma's The Untouchables, and Terrence Malick's Days of Heaven.
"My real goal was to write classical music", said Morricone, who is perhaps best known for his scores to Sergio Leone's "spaghetti westerns" and who belatedly won an Oscar in 2016 for Quentin Tarantino's "The Hateful Eight". "Rest in peace #EnnioMorricone you've left us some the most iconic of music pieces for us to whistle on to this one is from #TheGoodTheBadandTheUgly enjoy and say a little prayer of gratitude".
At the Santa Cecilia Conservatory music school in Rome, he was classmates with Sergio Leone.
It was a night to remember for Morricone, who had been nominated for Oscars five times ("The Hateful Eight" was his sixth) but until then had never won.
Born on Nov 10, 1928, Morricone began composing at the tender age of six, and at just 10 he enrolled in a trumpet school at prestigious Saint-Cecilia conservatory in Rome.
A statement from the family said Morricone "has preserved to the last full lucidity and great dignity". He was wildly prolific (he composed over 20 scores in 1971 alone) and while best known for the spaghetti western sound, you really can't pin him down to any one style.
The '90s would land him one more Oscar nod and on Golden Globe nod and one win for Barry Levinson's neo-noir crime biopic Bugsy and Italian drama The Legend of 1900, with other notable works including Lorenzo's Oil, In the Line of Fire, Wolf and Bulworth.
Shortly before receiving his lifetime Oscar, Morricone joked that he would have been happy without the coveted statuette, saying: "I would have remained in the company of illustrious non-winners". He was also awarded an honorary life achievement Oscar in 2007.
Ennio Morricone is survived by his wife Maria, his three sons Andrea, a composer and conductor, Giovanni and Marco and his daughter Alessandra. I saw him about a year ago and he seemed strong, he was conducting at the O2 (Arena in London).
