Park's body was found in a wooded area of northern Seoul shortly after midnight.
A police official told reporters at a televised briefing at the scene there was no sign of foul play, although a detailed investigation would be needed. It continued with a request that his remains be cremated and scattered around his parents' graves.
As the city of almost 10 million was shocked, a representative for Park's family said it was time to "let him go", and requested people to not spread "groundless statements".
After trying to call her father and discovering the phone had been switched off, she contacted the police and a full-scale search was launched. The Seoul Metropolitan Government said it will hold a funeral organized by the city at Seoul National University Hospital before he is buried on Monday.
"I brainwashed myself, bearing tremendous fear and humiliation, that all of this was in the interest of Seoul City, myself, and mayor Park", she said, according to the document. The #MeToo movement that began in 2018 in South Korea overthrew many male celebrities, but the women who had raised allegations sometimes faced strong online attacks and other backlash from supporters of the alleged abusers. "My condolences to his family and to the people of Seoul during this hard time", U.S. Ambassador to South Korea Harry Harris on Friday tweeted.
She said that his phone was off and she had been unable to reach him.
Park had also openly expressed his ambition to become president by contesting the 2022 election.
Just three months earlier, Democratic Party member Oh Keo-don - the mayor of Busan, the country's second-most populous city - resigned after admitting he had sexually harassed a female official.
"I feel sorry, but apart from that there needed to be a clear explanation on the sexual harassment", said office worker Jeon Sung-jae.
Questioned by local media, Seoul authorities said they were "not aware" of the allegations, Yonhap reported.
The reason for Park's disappearance wasn't clear. We have seen that there is a dark side even for prominent figures at the forefront of social change. Seo Jeong-hyup, vice mayor for administrative affairs, will serve as the acting mayor for the capital government until a by-election in April 2021. The daughter didn't explain the contents of the message, said an officer at the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency who was responsible for the search operation.
It was confirmed that Seoul Mayor Park Won Soon was found dead at around 12:20 AM KST on July 10 KST.
