Apple has started making its flagship iPhone 11 at the Foxconn plant near Chennai, the first time it's manufactured a top-of-the-line model in the country, marking a boost for the government's Make in India initiative. Apple could reportedly save around 22 percent in import duties on locally assembled iPhone 11 in India. The plant used to make the earlier iPhone SE too.
Significant boost to Make in India! In 2017 Apple announced new handsets in September as usual and released the iPhone 8 the same month, but the iPhone X didn't hit the shops until the start of November.
The iPhone 11 is available in India at a starting price of around Rs 68,000 a unit. Pegatron, another assembly partner of Apple, plans to set up a local subsidiary in India and begin operations in the country, according to Bloomberg.
Reports suggest that Foxconn plans to invest up to $1 billion to expand its India factory where it assembles iPhone models.
Apple has been seeking ways to ramp up production in India for years, but the company has struggled to find contract manufacturers that adhered to its safety and quality standards, people familiar with the matter said.
The iPhone maker now commands roughly 1% of the smartphone market in India, but is among firms that dominate the premium handset segment (phones priced at $400 or above).
