In a message to V.I.A. on Saturday - sent while she was out posting flyers and searching alleyways - Soriano said she is "absolutely floored by the attention" her story is receiving. "I'll always be with you". As the eldest of three, Soriano said she didn't get a lot of one-on-one time with her mother and it was her mother's way of reminding her that she was loved.
Fitted inside a custom-made teddy bear, the voice recording was given to Ms Soriano as a Christmas present in 2017. 53-year-old Marilyn died of cancer in June last year.
But in her "frazzled state" she said she forgot to tell her fiancé that the backpack was still in the road.
Ryan Reynolds is used to playing a superhero on the big screen, but the Canadian actor is willing to help out close to home too.
The bear in question was in a Herschel backpack that Soriano dropped on the ground in front of her U-Haul while moving, upon receiving a call that a friend who was en route to help her move had been hit by a auto, according to Global News Canada.
Soriano immediately put down the bag she was carrying up to the apartment and leaned it against the van.
Her bag was only unattended for a few minutes, but in that short time it went missing - along with her cherished stuffed animal.
"Lo and behold on the security footage, this guy was seen looking around, making sure nobody was looking first", she described. "I feel like I lost her all over again".
Also in the bag, Soriano said, were important documents - a book of blank cheques, her citizenship card, her and her fiance's passports and social insurance cards - and valuable electronics - an iPad and a Nintendo Switch.
"I couldn't sleep at all last night after the loss and all day today I've just been shaking".
"It was her signature look", Soriano said.
Mara Soriano, left, and her mother, Marilyn Soriano, at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto near the end of Marilyn's life.
For Ms Soriano, who came to Canada from the Philippines as a child, "the bear was the last reminder of the mum I grew up with, before she became my mum with cancer". The friend had been hit by a vehicle and Soriano rushed to help him, accompanying him to the emergency room.
Vancouver-raised movie star Ryan Reynolds is offering a cash reward to whoever reunites Mara Soriano with her stolen teddy bear that contains a recording of her late mother's voice. "No questions asked, please bring back the bear".
