A screenshot taken from the Twitter account of former U.S. Vice President and presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden shows he tweeted on August 11, 2020 "Ive picked @KamalaHarris - a fearless fighter for the little guy, and one of the country's finest public servants - as my running mate".
Kamala Harris has been selected by Joe Biden as his running mate. "And she has focused like a laser on the racial disparities as a result of the coronavirus", Biden said Tuesday of Harris, who, like himself, is considered a moderate Democrat.
Mr Gore said in a tweet that Harris "has made climate and environmental justice a top priority" in her political career, and he said she would be a "strong advocate in the White House".
Harris is a US senator and African American leader from California.
Harris, 55, a California senator, whose first name means "lotus" in Sanskrit, had previously focused her presidential bid on her readiness to take on President Donald Trump.
She was the first woman to serve as San Francisco's district attorney, elected in 2003, and the first woman to serve as California's attorney general, elected to this role in 2010.
E Tok about how she don work closely with im late son, Beau, wen she be California attorney general.
She competed against Mr Biden in the Democratic primaries but ended her campaign before the Iowa caucuses in February.
And Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti praised his "dear friend" and fellow Californian Ms Harris for her selection as running mate.
In the days after George Floyd died at the hands of police in Minneapolis in May, sparking a national conversation on race, Harris joined protesters in the streets of Washington. The former national security adviser has also come under fire recently from the left for her investments in fossil fuel companies.
Harris also struggled to win over Black voters during the Democratic nomination contest, many of whom raised concerns about her record as a public prosecutor.
This move by Biden will put Harris on a debate path against Vice President Mike Pence on Wednesday, October 19, in Salt Lake City.
But her bid for the Democratic presidential nomination ended miserably, with Harris exiting from the race in December past year. And as a former Harvard professor from a very blue state, with a pugnacious political style, she likely would be easy to characterize as too progressive for many moderate and independent voters.
The decision comes after Biden and Harris publicly clashed in the primary campaign-notably when Harris drew sharp contrasts with the former vice president when she challenged him on the debate stage of his past resistance to federally mandated desegregation busing.
Her parents were immigrants to the United States - her father from Jamaica, her mother from India.
Rice congratulated Harris, calling her in a statement a "tenacious and trailblazing leader who will make a great partner on the campaign trail". It noted that Biden has missed previous deadlines to announce his pick, and that the timeline could "slip again".
