Walmart+ can be paid for monthly at $12.95 per month.
Amazon Prime, launched in 2005, has tens of millions of members throughout the world who pay $119 a year, or $12.99 a month, for faster shipping, access to its movie and TV streaming service, savings at Whole Foods Market locations and other perks. Online sale jumped 97 percent in the second quarter, the company recently reported, lifting overall sales by almost 6 percent. Current subscribers will automatically become Walmart Plus members.
The new milestone reflects the ongoing shift toward online shopping amid the COVID-19 pandemic, and the fuzzy line between online and physical retail sales.
Although Walmart's online sales have grown substantially over the course of the coronavirus pandemic - with the retailer's virtual business in the U.S.
"We've taken the time to develop a product that is grounded in meeting customer needs, and we're launching in a few short weeks with benefits that are of the greatest help to our customers now, with much more to come", a company spokesperson said in an email when asked about the perceived delays. Delivery Unlimited was also widely expanded last fall.
The Bentonville, Arkansas-based retailer has also invested in services like curbside pickup and next-day and two-day delivery. Otherwise, the only other notable feature of the service is fuel discounts, offering "up to" five cents off a gallon at Walmart, Murphy USA and Murphy Express gas stations. Sam's Club fuel stations will soon be added.
Whiteside said more benefits will be coming to Walmart Plus, though avoided offering any specifics. "We've designed this program as the ultimate life hack for them".
