Lewis Hamilton wasn't too dishearted after a disappointing Italian Grand Prix, which saw him racing through the pack from the back of the grid midway through the race.
"It was such a insane race".
But he had been given a 10-seconds stop-go penalty for taking a pit-stop while the pit-lane was closed after Kevin Magnussen had pulled up and parked his Haas vehicle in the pit-lane.
The last time none of the "Big Three" teams won a race before Sunday was at the 2013 Australian Grand Prix when Kimi Raikkonen did it for Lotus - 146 races ago.
"I think, especially, getting back from P6 to P2 and chasing Pierre and managing to finish three or four tenths behind him, we need to be proud of that, we need to be proud of the auto. All these problems are lessons we learn and we need to look to the future and make progress", Mattia Binotto said in front of the Sky Sports F1 camera. "I have no words".
It is the junior team's second grand prix victory - their first also at Monza, with Sebastian Vettel in 2008.
He added: "It's incredible I'm halfway disappointed with P2, I wouldn't have believed I would've got a chance to fight for victory today".
"The best I can do", said Leclerc over the team radio of his effort.
British driver Lando Norris was fourth on a strong afternoon for the resurgent McLaren team.
By that time Hamilton's penalty had been announced.
He has a 47-point lead over Bottas in the championship. Sainz chased him all the way to the line but the Alpha Tauri driver triumphed by just 0.4 seconds. It was the 94th pole of Hamilton's career. He also expressed relief that Verstappen couldn't gain from his penalty.
His left rear brake was ablaze seconds earlier.
But 12 seconds before Hamilton entered the pit lane Race Control closed it due to the location of Magnussen's vehicle.
But the timing of the pit stops around two mid-race safety cars effectively ended Sainz's hopes.
Hamilton and Alfa Romeo's Antonio Giovinazzi, who also committed the same offence, received a 10 second stop and go penalty.
Then, two laps later, Leclerc crashed at close to 260km/h at the Parabolica, hitting the barriers heavily.
"Obviously disappointed to not get the win, because today we had a lot of pace and we felt that without that red flag it would have been a different story because I know I was the virtual race leader with Hamilton's penalty".
After 25 minutes, the race restarted on lap 28, Hamilton again moving clear before pitting.
Hamilton will be on eight points until at least November 17, when his points from Brazil past year will be wiped, during which period there are six grands prix.
Verstappen then retired from 14th as Sainz charged through to second, passing Raikkonen at the first chicane, in pursuit of the Frenchman.
