"Kelly (who declined to comment for this story) initially believed, people close to him said, that Trump was making a ham-handed reference to the selflessness of America's all-volunteer force", the magazine reported.
Adam Kinzinger of IL defended Fox reporter Jennifer Griffin after President Trump called for her firing on Saturday.
"This is not surprising, nor is it the first time President Trump has attacked veterans, but it is a new low, even for Trump", Will Goodwin, an Army veteran and director of government relations for advocacy group VoteVets, said in a statement. Trump also said permanently wounded soldiers should be kept out of military parades, and canceled a visit to a US military cemetery because rain risked damaging his hairstyle.
"The President has a proven track record of standing for those whose voice has always been ignored and who have failed to benefit from all our country has to offer, and he intends to continue to support all Americans, regardless of race, religion, or creed", he added.
The Federalist's Mollie Hemingway, meanwhile, told Kurtz, "What's confirmed is that anonymous sources are talking".
What has the reaction been?.
The Atlantic specifically reported that Trump didn't want to attend a ceremony at the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery in France in 2018 because he was concerned that the rain would ruin his hair.
"If the article is true - and it appears to be, based on other things he's said - it is absolutely damning".
Media captionTrump and the USA military: Friends or foe?
In an interview in the late 1990s, Trump, known for being a fixture in the NY tabloids at the time, made light of military service in Vietnam by comparing it to avoiding sexually transmitted diseases in the NY dating scene.
In a tweet, Trump wrote that "Jennifer Griffin should be fired for this kind of reporting".
"I would be willing to swear on anything that I never said that about our fallen heroes". "It is a disgraceful situation by a magazine that's a bad magazine". "The divisive, false, and demeaning propaganda of the critical race theory movement is contrary to all we stand for as Americans and should have no place in the Federal government".
But there have been previous spats and controversies. John McCain (R-Ariz.), a veteran and former prisoner of war who often criticised Trump, died in 2018.
Mr Trump had a public row with the parents of a soldier who criticised him at the Democratic National Convention when he was running for president. He received five deferments from a military draft during the Vietnam War - four for academic reasons and one for bone spurs, a calcium build-up in the heels.
