According to the Guardian, the west London outfit are now "close" to a deal for Senegal worldwide Mendy, with the 28-year-old nearing an £18.2m move to Stamford Bridge to provide competition for under-fire first-choice 'keeper, Kepa Arrizabalaga.
The 28-year-old keeper only joined Rennes from Stade Reims last summer but he enjoyed an excellent first year at the club to help them finish third in Ligue 1 and secure European football this coming campaign.
Mendy is the latest, and Rennes' Nicolas Holveck acknowledged negotiations were under way, but there is work still to do on the potential deal. He wants to come here and be a top player for Chelsea, and really prove his talents on this stage'.
"Discussions have started with Chelsea for Edouard Mendy", Holveck said. But the agreement at the moment is not 100% completed between the three parties. We know the value of Édouard as a player and as a man too, because in our dressing room, he is a very important player.
According to the report, the west London side have already had a £14m bid for the Lille shot-stopper rejected in the 2020 summer transfer window.
