Gal Gadot is also a part of the upcoming multi-starrer murder mystery, Death on the Nile.
Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot has been cast as Cleopatra in Patty Jenkin's new biopic. "Gal Gadot deserves this role". Her approach could honestly be unlike anything we've seen from a Cleopatra story. "Can't be more grateful about this A team", Gadot wrote on Sunday.
Gadot, who is looking forward to the release of her much-anticipated superhero movie Wonder Woman 1984 directed by Jenkins, said Cleopatra was a story she wanted to tell for a very long time. "Especially to all the boys and girls who are risking their lives protecting my country against the horrific acts conducted by Hamas, who are hiding like cowards behind women and children", she wrote.
Gal Gadot shared this image. "Please do better", one commented on Gadot's post on Twitter. "This is a disgrace", another wrote.
This will be far from the first Cleopatra project to hit the screen, as the Egyptian ruler has been depicted in numerous projects throughout the decades. Tell me, how do you see yourself fit to play this role?
Others came to Gadot's defense, saying that Cleopatra is of Greek ancestry so there is no problem letting the actress portray her onscreen.
However, many, including the screenplay author, were quick to point out that Cleopatra was neither Arab nor Black, but rather a Macedonian Greek. Not African, not black.
Former professor and outspoken BDS advocate Steven Salaita tweeted, "Whatever you think of her being cast as Cleopatra, never forget that Gal Gadot proudly served (and continues to support) a colonial army notorious for maiming and murdering civilians".
Screenwriter Laeta Kalogridis appeared to address the controversy by reminding the public that Cleopatra was ethnically Greek.
Director Patty Jenkins raved about the action scenes that can be found in "Wonder Woman".
Gadot and Jenkins' highly-anticipated Wonder Woman 1984, a sequel to their hit 2017 film about the DC Comics superhero, is now set to hit theaters on Christmas Day after most recently being pushed back from its expected October 2 release date.
