But, according to reports on Friday, United have moved to secure Pogba's services until at least the end of next season by taking advantage of the extension clause in the World Cup winner's contract. For me, this period is another chance to prove that.
Whether or not United have extended Pogba's contract to keep him or to just make sure they get a transfer fee for him in June, the move certainly throws the gauntlet down to the Frenchman to deliver good, consistent performances this term.
He said: "Paul's our player, he's gonna be here for another two years and sure he's focused on doing his best for us and we want to see the best for Paul".
"Every player goes through hard periods but you have to be strong mentally and we all need to try and get the team back to where it belongs", Pogba said at the time. Real never made an offer near what the Red Devils wanted.
"I don't doubt his resilience in that respect he's very professional so he wants to put himself ready for selection and then it's up to me to choose him or not and if I want to take him out the firing line.I speak to him regularly and he's been very positive in his communication".
"I explained to Bruno and he accepted it, no problem."
"We've been in touch with the ones that have been away and it's one of those things you have to get over as soon as you can", he said.
"Bruno has lost two league games and came in February, it's been two in quick succession, he's not used to losing league games - but welcome to Manchester United".
"Now the players have had some internationals and we're getting that fitness back, now it's about creating that energy in every game".
