While Chelsea's decision to include Cech in the squad is to make sure that they are not short of goalkeepers if there is a coronavirus outbreak in the squad, it could increase pressure on Kepa and perhaps push him to step up his game.
"Petr Cech has been included in the squad as emergency goalkeeper cover", a statement on Chelsea's website read.
'This is a precautionary step due to the unprecedented conditions now caused by the Covid-19 crisis, ' the statement explained.
Frank Lampard has given an explanation why he included Petr Cech in Chelsea Premier League squad for the new season.
"Pete's been training with the keepers for a little while. In any case, we hope it won't be necessary", said Cech.
"Pete has been training with the goalkeepers for a few weeks now, he is passing on quality".
He reasoned: 'We had a space in the squad and this year is like no other because of Covid and what it might do to selection and isolation. "Pete still does his day job but he's there if we need him".
He returns to the club despite the recent signing of Senegalese global Edouard Mendy from Rennes (coincidentally the same club from which they signed Cech), who is expected to be the club's first choice goalkeeper.
Will we see Cech on Federation Internationale de Football Association 21? There was room in the squad and I was ready as an emergency option.
Speaking in the build-up to that game, Lampard hinted at his frustration with the existing goalkeepers in response to criticism he has the worst defensive record of any Chelsea boss after 43 League games, conceding 63 goals.
"If we're in crisis we couldn't ask for anything much better than having Petr Cech around".
