McDonald's said under its McPlant line, it could offer products including burgers, chicken substitutes and breakfast sandwiches, which it expects to test in some markets in 2021.
But McDonald's is playing catch-up with key rivals when it comes to plant-based meat.
The company announced in an investor event on Monday that "markets around the world are implementing a series of operational, process and formulation changes" in how they make their burgers.
McDonald's global revenues fell 2 percent to $5.4 billion as worldwide markets, including Europe experience a second wave of Covid-19 shutdowns. Both companies have become prevalent across the industry in recent years.
Update 11/9 3:30PM ET: Beyond Meat has said that they co-created the plant-based patty for McDonald's.
McDonald's reported a global comparable sales decline of 2.2% for the quarter with a consolidated revenue decrease of 2%. "It's not a matter of if McDonald's will get into plant-based, it's a matter of when", McDonald's Chief Executive Officer Chris Kempczinski said on a call with analysts.
Similar to fast-food competitors like Burger King, the company is aiming to try its hand on the plant-based trend.
