Healthcare workers who are likely to provide direct care to COVID-19 patients and other vulnerable residents will be the first group in the state to receive the COVID-19 vaccine once it is available, according to a news release issued by the office of Gov. Greg Abbott.
The coronavirus vaccine developed by the University of Oxford is highly effective at stopping people developing Covid-19 symptoms, a large trial shows. Volunteers received 2 doses of the vaccine ChAdOx1 nCoV-19, or a placebo MenACWY vaccine. Thirteen serious adverse events occurred in the six months since the first dose was given, none of which were related to either study vaccine.
"The populations at greatest risk of serious COVID-19 disease include people with existing health conditions and older adults".
These data are consistent with the Phase I data reported for healthy adults aged 18-55 early this year.
Sparking global hope, pharmaceutical company Pfizer Inc. has applied to United States health regulators for emergency use authorization after final trials showed its vaccine candidate was 95% effective in preventing COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. "The next step will be to see if this translates into protection from the disease itself", Dr. Maheshi Ramasamy said.
It found that the vaccine caused few side effects, was better tolerated in older adults than in younger adults, and produced a similar immune response across age groups.
For most vaccines, older adults do not exhibit as strong a response as younger adults, and vaccine-induced antibodies commonly display a lower protective capacity.
Co-author, Professor Sarah Gilbert, University of Oxford, UK, said: "The WHO has outlined a number of critical factors for COVID-19 vaccines, including that they must be targeted at the most at-risk groups including older adults".
"These findings have led to the use of neutralisation assays to assess immune responses in recent human COVID-19 vaccine trials", it said. Besides, they plan to hold the third phase of the trials with the participation of old people.
