Pedestrians walk along a footbridge in Hong Kong on November 24, 2020, as a spike in COVID-19 cases has brought tighter restrictions, with a planned travel bubble between Hong Kong and Singapore postponed for at least a few weeks on November 22.
"Translating pharma lingo: the announced price of Pfizer of $19.50 and Moderna of $25-$37 per dose actually means their price of $39 and $50-$74 per person".
COVAX - co-led by GAVI vaccine group, the World Health Organization and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations - aims to discourage governments from hoarding COVID-19 vaccines and to focus on first vaccinating the most at risk in every country.
It will cost less than $20 for a two-dose regimen for global supplies, half the price of other vaccines that are in final stages of clinical trials in developed countries, Kirill Dmitriev, CEO, RDIF said.
RDIF had said in a statement, "Sputnik V will be two or more times cheaper than mRNA vaccines with similar efficacy levels".
It said it procures more than 2 billion doses of vaccines annually for routine immunisation and outbreak response on behalf of almost 100 countries.
The Russian vaccine uses two different vectors based on the human adenovirus, rather than using one and the same vector for two doses.
It is also in talks to buy USA firm Novavax's potential COVID-19 vaccine.
"We plan to conduct the third interim data analysis after 78 confirmed coronavirus cases among volunteers and we have every reason to believe that the results will exceed our initial expectations". Another vaccine candidate developed by the Oxford University and AstraZeneca on Monday showed an average efficiency of 70% among Covid-19 patients.
The data would be published in a leading scientific journal next month for experts to scrutinise, Mr Dmitriev promised.
Final data analysis will be available by the end of Phase 3 clinical trials involving 40,000 volunteers.
Mass vaccination is expected to start in 2021, and more than 2 million doses of Sputnik V will produced in Russian Federation this year, Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova said today.
Dmitriev said partners in India, South Korea, China, and Brazil are producing the vaccine, which could cost less than $10 a shot.
