Don’t be alarmed - Ontario testing its Alert Ready system today

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission will be conducting a test of its National Public Alerting System.

Still, some took to social media today to joke about how much the alert scared them when it went out across Ontario at 12:55 p.m.

Since January, these alerts have warned Canadians of potentially life-threatening situations including tornadoes, floods and Amber Alerts.

The alert produces audible alarms on televisions, radios, and mobile devices.

For a wireless device to receive a test alert, the CRTC says it must be connected to an LTE wireless or a newer wireless network, it must be wireless public alerting compatible and equipped with a recent Canadian version of its operating software.

Individuals who have a compatible mobile device that doesn't receive Wednesday's test are advised to contact their service provider.

Thankfully, the days of people actually ranting about and protesting the helpful and integral alerts are pretty much over, with the majority of people now condemning the complainers rather than the system itself. These alerts have been credited with saving lives.

The alert program is a collaborative initiative between the federal, provincial and territorial governments.

The exact time of the test will vary depending on the province or territory. Alerts will be broadcast automatically at no cost to the user.
