The rivalary game between Washington and Washington State - originally scheduled for Friday night - was canceled on Sunday after the Cougars announced they couldn't meet the 53-man scholarship mark due to ongoing COVID-19 issues.
The Huskies will play Utah on Saturday at Husky Stadium in a replacement match-up for the canceled Apple Cup, the Pac-12 announced Tuesday night.
Lake said his staff had already put in prep work on Washington State but that talk started to develop even before Washington's game last Saturday against Arizona that the Apple Cup could be facing a postponement. All 20 of Cal's conference games will be televised by either Pac-12 Network, ESPN/2/U, FOX/FS1 or CBS.
"The scheduling of this game is consistent with the Conference's commitment to provide opportunities for student-athletes through maximum scheduling flexibility while still prioritizing health and safety", the Pac-12 said in a statement. Their season opener against Cal on November 7 was canceled after the Golden Bears could not meet the 53-player scholarship threshold due to one positive COVID-19 test and subsequent contact tracing.
The UW Huskies will bring a 2-0 record into Saturday after a decisive 44-27 win over Arizona in Seattle last Saturday.
ASU now only has three remaining games on its schedule: Dec. 5 versus UCLA, Dec. 11 at UA and a game to be scheduled on either Dec. 18 or Dec. 19 against an opponent that has yet to be determined.
San Diego State was a possible nonconference opponent as well. I'd like to thank the Pac-12 for their ability to work on behalf of students at both schools to make this happen, as well as our staff for all of their efforts behind-the-scenes to prepare for a home game.
"If we were not in the Pac-12 championship game, definitely I think that last game there should be the Apple Cup", Lake said. Both of those contests were scheduled for this weekend but were canceled due to COVID-19 protocols.
