Golf great Phil Mickelson is teamed up with NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley against two-time Super Bowl champion Peyton Manning and Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry in the Match III.
Peyton Manning doesn't hesitate to point out Phil Mickelson's comment that he's getting an upgrade in his partner by playing with Charles Barkley instead of Tom Brady.
A wayward drive at the seventh turned into a win for Mickelson and Barkley when Manning found a greenside bunker, but the 4-up lead lasted only until a missed Barkley putt let Curry and Manning win the eighth to pull within 3-down.
The 18-hole modified alternate shot event began with Manning parring the opening hole to put himself and Curry ahead, but Mickelson and Barkley, shaking off the taunts, won the next four holes to seize a 3-up advantage. Charitable contributions will go toward Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
While Manning and Carrie were skilled golfers, Barkley struggled and mocked his game, but he was better than expected under Mickelson's tutelage, who offered numerous advice throughout the match.
Manning passed on Woods' little gift to Barkley before Capital One's The Match: Champions for Change, and it included a number of traffic cones and a safety jacket.
The first release of The Match was played in 2018 in Shadow Creek in Las Vegas as Mickelson beat Tiger Woods in a $ 9 million winning match.
A rematch was held in May at Medalist Golf Club in Hobe Sound, Fla., where Woods and Manning beat Mickelson and six-times Super Bowl-winning quarterback Tom Brady in an event that raised over $20 million U.S. for COVID-19 relief.
