The news comes just hours after Discovery Plus announced a multi-year deal with Vodafone that will make the streamer available to Vodafone subscribers in the United Kingdom and 11 European territories. Think again, chump! Discovery, the owner of HGTV, Food Network, TLC, and of course, Shark Week, is entering the streaming wars today.
Verizon customers will be able to get it up for to 12 months for free.
The new year is kicking off with the launch of a new streaming service - Discovery+, which offers programming from Discovery's networks including HGTV, Food Network, TLC, ID, OWN, Travel Channel, Discovery Channel and Animal Planet. If you are on the Play More or Get More Unlimited plan, you can claim your 12 months of discovery+ for free.
The streamer, which costs US$4.99 per month with ads or US$6.99 for the ad-free version, was unveiled last month having been two years in the making. And if you have a TV with built-in Chromecast or AirPlay support, you can use those protocols to cast content from the app. It is available on Amazon Fire TV (and will be coming to Amazon Prime Channels later), Apple i-devices (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch) and Apple TV, Google living room devices (Chromecast with Google TV, Android TV), Android, Microsoft Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, Roku, and 2017 and newer Samsung smart TVs. Each account will include up to five user profiles and four concurrent streams.
Is Discovery Plus available in my country?
Discovery+ will be offered by TIM in Italy in early 2021 and the service is also planning 2021 launches in the Nordics, the Netherlands, Brazil and in parts of Asia.
The deal is predicted to attain greater than 100 million Vodafone TV, broadband and cell subscribers throughout the U.Ok., Germany, Turkey, Italy, Spain, Romania, Portugal, Greece, Czech Republic, Hungary, Eire and Iceland. "Thanks to this new strategic partnership our viewers and Vodafone's customers will have direct access to the best global and local Discovery content anytime anywhere". The unique, incremental reach offered by discovery+, along with lighter ad loads, a younger demographic and data-driven cross-platform capabilities, has been enthusiastically received by the marketplace. Beginning with the Olympic Games in Tokyo next year, discovery+ will become the streaming Home of the Olympics in Europe with access to every minute, every medal, and every hero, live and on demand*.
