Sicknick had joined the Capitol Police in July 2008, and most recently served in the department's First Responders Unit.
Shocking video from the DC riots shows a bloodied police officer screaming for help as he's crushed by protesters inside the Capitol building. Sicknick returned to his division office and collapsed, the report said.
Officer Sicknick died Thursday night after succumbing to injuries inflicted while engaging with protesters on Capitol Hill Wednesday.
He is the sixth member of the Capitol Police to die in the line of duty. One woman was shot by law enforcement while she was entering the Capitol, and the other three died from "medical emergencies" according to police.
Lawmakers offered their condolences to Sicknick's family, including from House Minority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., who has credited Capitol Police officers with saving his life during the congressional baseball shooting in 2017.
News of the officer's death comes shortly after Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund resigned amid criticism of the department's response to rioters who broke through barricades, vandalized the building and clashed with police.
The statement says: "Brian is a hero and that is what we would like people to remember". He said in a statement earlier Thursday that Capitol Police and other law enforcement officers were "actively attacked" with metal pipes and other weapons.
Quigley added: "I'm no expert in security, but you can tell we were out-manned in an hour before the debate", referring to Congress' proceedings to certify Biden's win.
