Manatee in Florida found with 'Trump' scraped on its back

The Citrus County Chronicle reports that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is now seeking information regarding a manatee that was discovered with "Trump" scraped into its back near the Blue Hole on the Homosassa River.

The West Indian manatee, a species classified as "threatened" under US wildlife protection laws, was found on Sunday in the headwaters of the Homosassa River on the state's west coast, about 100 miles (160 km) west of Orlando.

Here is the video of the poor manatee that had "TRUMP" carved into its body.

Warrington told WTVT, The Fox-owned TV station in Tampa, she had been leading a boat tour on Sunday when she spotted the manatee.

The president's last name may have been written in algae on the marine mammal's back, the Center for Biological Diversity told USA TODAY on Monday night, an act prohibited under the Endangered Species Act. She said she recognized the manatee by the propeller scars.

"Manatees aren't billboards, and people shouldn't be messing with these sensitive and imperiled animals for any reason", Jaclyn Lopez, the center's Florida director, said in a statement. It is not uncommon to see hundreds of manatees swimming in Homosassa Springs and Crystal River.

A spokeswoman for the US Fish and Wildlife Service did not immediately return a request for comment.

Manatees are protected under the Endangered Species Act since 1963. And those convicted of violating federal-protection laws could face fines up to $100,000 and up to one year in jail, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation (FWC).
