Howard Liebengood was 51 years old. The death of Capitol police officer Brian Sicknick is being investigated as a possible murder as he was allegedly struck with a fire extinguisher. It took hours for authorities to reassert control of the building with Capitol Police eventually getting help from the National Guard as well as local police and federal law enforcement agencies.
Although Capitol Police did not confirm how he died, it has been widely reported that Mr Liebengood is thought to have taken his own life.
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends, and colleagues", Capitol Police said.
Officers arrested Leffingwell, and, before being read his Miranda rights, he apologized for striking the officer, Amendola said.
The complaint cites the reporting by the New York Post, and says that he was photographed carrying a U.S. Capitol Police shield and wearing a police vest, both of which are valued at more than $2000.
Chief Steven Sund recently announced his resignation after five people died in the chaos. "This is a tragic day".
House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi offered her condolences on behalf of the House of Representatives. While serving as captain, she was assigned to the Capitol Division as the Executive Officer.
On Tuesday, Acting U.S. Attorney Michael Sherwin also issued a statement urging members of the media who were attacked or threatened during the riot to contact his office to give details.
Two Seattle police officers were placed on administrative leave after the department discovered that they were reportedly in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday.
In the wake of the attack, several lawmakers have questioned Capitol Police preparation. Sicknick was originally injured after being hit in the head by an extinguisher during the riots in which supporters of President Trump stormed the Capitol on January 6.
