"This vaccine provides us with another tool to overcome the current emergency", said EMA Executive Director Emer Cooke.
The decision clears the way for a second vaccine option after the Pfizer-BioNTech jab in an inoculation campaign that has been assailed by critics as lagging far behind those of its neighbours.

Cook stressed that European Union authorities "will closely monitor data on the safety and effectiveness of the vaccine to ensure ongoing protection of the European Union public".
Despite the increased output, the US remains well behind the goals set by Operation Warp Speed - the joint effort from the Department of Defense and the Department of Health and Human Services, which is tasked with distributing the vaccines.
