Root scored 228 from 331 deliveries, making it the highest individual score by an English cricketer against Sri Lanka.
Root added the 32 runs required from his overnight score in less than an hour on the third day, hitting a four off spinner Lasith Emuldeniya to reach 200 in the empty Galle stadium. Root was the last man to be out and lunch was called with the end of the England innings. While the ongoing innings is his third Test century in the sub-continent, it is worth mentioning it is also his career-best score over here.
Root's first double century as a captain came against New Zealand in Hamilton back in 2019. Root and Dan Lawrence, who scored 73 on his Test debut, built a 173-run partnership after the tourists resumed the day on 127-2. Seamer Asitha Fernando (2-44) removed Buttler and Curran in successive balls, before Dom Bess was run out in a mix-up with Root as the visitors lost three wickets for 10 runs.
Root continued to dominate the spinners and reached 150 off 225 balls when he guided Embuldeniya behind point for a single.
"I've spent lot of time with myself, I had so much time to look back and watch cricket around the world, learning off my peers". "It is really important that we make the most of this first innings lead that we have got now", Root told reporters.
"The best way we can start tomorrow is get these six wickets as quickly as we can".
The wicket belonged to Leach, who located Kusal Mendis' outside edge with his penultimate ball of the day, but there is room for improvement and a comfortable buffer of runs still to play with.
Broad and England's bowlers will now be looking to rip through Sri Lanka for the second time in the game after the hosts collapsed to 135 all out after electing to bat on day one. But the eventual lead of 286- Dilruwan Perera's three wickets in the session helping to restrict it- was not to be sniffed at. Only Mark Wood caused either opener any consternation when a rapid bouncer hit Perera on the hand moments after he brought up his own fifty, late in the afternoon session.
But he remained with Lasith Embuldeniya (nought) at the end of the day making life hard for the England attack.
