U.S. Capitol lockdown lifted, fire nearby contained

The U.S. Capitol building has been placed on lockdown due to an "external security threat". Biden will be sworn in on Wednesday.

Reporters at the Capitol were evacuated or locked down amid an "external security threat" as footage captured plumes of smoke rising near the building.

The response underlines the vast sense of alert in Washington, DC, this week.

The evacuation of some participants and the lockdown were ordered by the acting chief of Capitol Police in an abundance of caution, officials said.

The D.C. Fire Department said they extinguished a blaze near the Navy Yard on H Street, and that there were no injuries. "If you are outside, seek cover".

Law enforcement have remained on high alert in the vicinity of the Capitol after rioters broke into the building after a pro-Trump rally on January 6, with chatter suggesting another attack around Joe Biden's inauguration on January 20.

A thick cloud of smoke could be seen on videos posted to social media.

In the meantime, US Secret Service tweeted that there is no threat to public.

With military and civil law enforcement already on increased guard against any warning signs ahead of the transfer of power after the siege on the Capitol earlier this month, the fire located under a nearby highway that could be viewed from the Capitol sent authorities scrambling. "Members and staff were advised to shelter in place while the incident is being investigated", she said in a statement.
