Having Ryan get shot with kryptonite on the finish of the Season 2 premiere retains it because the "gun" the story for the brand new season, as the consequences of what it does to her, embedded in her chest, will play out in the episodes to return. As she was playing the character of Batwoman, many expected another character would replace her in Batwoman Season 2.

Being down a Batwoman with the weight of responsibility for helping Gotham does not bode well for Luke and Mary. The way Sophie treats Ryan in their first scene together is very, very disappointing. Her cousin was Batman, so it was much less of an, "Oh my God, I'm a child on Christmas morning" however for Ryan, she brings that [excitement] into her takedowns when she's combating risky guys. Season one was already cut down to twenty episodes from the predetermined twenty-two. She's new to being Batwoman and also faces a lot of challenges in her regular life.

Also, Nicole Kang is also a standout again, as we're seeing how she feels about Alice.

In the first season of the show, Kane took on the Alice in Wonderland gang alongside her father Commander Jacob Kane who runs Crows Private Security. Mary's love for Kate and Kate's sympathy for Alice were clearly causing Mary to hold back, refrain from fully delving into her emotions. It's going to be a very big role for her.
