The South African variant of COVID-19 has been found in over a dozen countries, including Ireland.
While nearly 65 million people have already received their vaccine jabs as part of the global rollout which started in mid-December, concerns around the new variant's impact on immunisation efforts remain a hot topic among medical researchers.
Last week, Mr. Trump issued an order that lifted coronavirus-related travel restrictions for the United Kingdom, Ireland, Brazil and much of Europe starting on January 26. The restriction, along with the new South Africa ones, mean most non-US citizens who have been in one of those countries within the last 14 days are not eligible to travel to the United States.
Numerous countries reportedly affected by Trump's order have their own recent requirements for American travelers seeking to enter their borders.
"With the pandemic worsening, and more contagious variants emerging around the world, this is not the time to be lifting restrictions on worldwide travel", White House press secretary Jen Psaki tweeted last week.
The Covid-19 cases around the world approached the 100 million mark, as infections in the United States surpassed 25 million. These US citizens will likely be subjected to worldwide travel policies, which include presenting a negative Covid-19 test prior to departure and a mandatory self-isolation period. The government is also on alert over signs that a local variant of the virus, which is as much as 70% more transmissible, may be more deadly than the original strain.
The move to reinstate travel restrictions - and expand restrictions in South Africa's case - marks the Biden administration's latest effort to break with Trump's discursive approach to the pandemic as cases continue to climb across the country.
The new president will announce the move on Monday, that will stop entry into the United States from European Union countries, the UK, Brazil and South Africa.
White House officials said that South Africa would also be added to the restricted list on Monday because of concerns about a variant of the virus that has spread beyond that nation.
Biden last week issued an executive order directing federal agencies to require global air travelers to quarantine upon USA arrival.
On Tuesday, another CDC rule for travelers of the same age range will also require a negative coronavirus test taken three calendar days before travel.
Israel announced it would close its only worldwide airport, Ben Gurion global Airport, for one week to stop the spread of the coronavirus.
