Their statement on Twitter read: "It is with profound sadness that I have to inform you that musician and producer SOPHIE passed away this morning around 4am in Athens, where the artist had been living, following a sudden accident". The Scottish-born, L.A. -based producer transformed underground dance music, melding the worlds of house, techno, trance, pop and the avant-garde into something brazenly new and undeniable.
According to a statement from SOPHIE's management, SOPHIE died "following a sudden accident", adding "At this time respect and privacy for the family is our priority". She has been credited with spearheading the hyper-pop movement that's the common sound with many of our favorite artists today.
After dropping a number of notable singles that would gain her a wider audience, Sophie would release her debut album, Oil of Every Pearl's Un-Insides, in 2018.
The transgender model and activist Munroe Bergdorf also took to Instagram to pay homage to Sophie and everything she meant in the trans community: "Our community has lost an icon, a pioneer and a visionary bright light".
The Grammy-nominated musician first burst onto the European club circuit in the early 2010s before quickly emerging as one of British music's modern-day pioneers - but one shrouded in secrecy.
The producer, also known as Sophie Xeon, released her debut single, Nothing More to Say in 2013.
Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Sophie developed a taste in music pretty early in her young life, thanks to her father who would make her listen to cassettes of electronic music in their auto.
Sophie was a stellar producer, a visionary, a reference. She will always be here with us. Not only for ingenious production and creativity but also for the message and visibility that was achieved.
"I'm sorry this is messy I deleted this three times I feel like it's hard to handle the information correctly".
Rest in peace, Sophie.
"Creating a more diverse, inspiring and meaningful future for us and the generations whose lives our decisions affect and help shape". "Thinking of Sophie's family and friends at this hard time".
"RestInPower SOPHIE. You were one of the most innovative, dynamic, and warm persons I had the pleasure of working with at 2019 Southbank Centre", Rodgers wrote.
