Recipients of Nobel prizes in South Africa include former Presidents Nelson Mandela and FW De Klerk, anti-apartheid activists Albert Luthuli, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and writer Nadine Gordimer.
Kushner, who is also former President Donald Trump's son-in-law, and Berkowitz were nominated by famed attorney Alan Dershowitz for their role in orchestrating the Abraham Accords, which saw the us mediate normalization agreements between Israel and four Muslim states. He was able to make a nomination due to his status as a professor emeritus of Harvard Law School, according to the outlet.
Trump left office on January 20 under a cloud of controversy, potentially affecting whether the two aides would be awarded the Nobel.
Because the Nobel Foundation doesn't release information about nominees until 50 years later, it's impossible to know just how many people have been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
The pair were recognized for four normalization deals between Israel and Arab nations known as the 'Abraham Accords'.
"The Nobel Peace Prize is not for popularity", Dershowitz wrote in a letter sent to the Nobel committee.
One person suggested that even being nominated for the award would have a negative impact for the Nobel organisation.
Another Twitter user suggested Kushner actually winning would be a huge blow to Trump after the former President's nominations by far-right Norwegian politician Christian Tybring-Gjedde were publicly laughed at. "We believe that the best way to address challenges is through cooperation and dialogue and that developing friendly relations among States advances the interests of lasting peace in the Middle East and around the world".
Kushner and Berkowitz, who was the Middle East envoy, were key figures in negotiating deals between Israel and the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Sudan and Morocco.
Berkowitz also reacted to the nomination in a statement, which read, "I would like to thank President Trump and Jared Kushner for having me on this team, and Professor Dershowitz for the nomination".
The annual Nobel Peace Prize Award Ceremony takes place in December in Oslo, Norway.
