Pelosi's announcement comes two days after the U.S. Senate voted to acquit former President Donald Trump over his conduct leading up to the riot during which five people died, including a U.S. Capitol Police officer.
A 9/11-type commission would be established by a statute passed by both chambers of the U.S. Congress and signed into law by the sitting president, said a CNN report, adding that members of the commission would not be elected leaders and would be outside the government. General Russel Honouré has been reviewing the Capitol's "security infrastructure" in the weeks since the riot, and is now looking into how to ensure an attack does not happen again. But the support of seven Republicans - and a blistering rebuke of Trump from Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky. - suggests there's enough bipartisan appetite for a commission that could likely shed more light on Trump's actions before, during and after the January 6 attack.
In a letter Monday to fellow House Democrats, Pelosi said retired Army Lt. Gen. Russel Honore has already been reviewing security needs and will continue to make proposals to ensure that it doesn't happen again.
"As we prepare for the Commission, it is also clear from General Honoré's interim reporting that we must put forth a supplemental appropriation to provide for the safety of Members and the security of the Capitol". Bill Cassidy, R-La., who voted to convict Trump, expressed support for the creation of an independent commission.
"There should be a complete investigation about what happened", said Sen.

For Democrats, the commission may aid in holding the president accountable after the impeachment inquiry failed to convict Trump with inciting supporters during his January 6 speech to stop the counting of votes for President Biden.
Last week, a prosecutor in Georgia revealed she was investigating Trump's efforts to subvert the state's results in the November 3 election by pressuring local officials to alter the vote count.
"There's still more evidence that the American people need and deserve to hear, and a 9/11 commission is a way to make sure that we secure the Capitol going forward - and that we lay bare the record of just how responsible and how abjectly violating of his constitutional oath President Trump really was", said senator Chris Coons, a Biden ally.
Pressure had been growing for an inquiry into events on January 6 when a Trump-supporting mob invaded and then ransacked the Capitol building in an attempt to prevent the certification of Joe Biden's election victory.
"If you use this model, I don't know how Kamala Harris doesn't get impeached if the Republicans take over the House, because she actually bailed out rioters", Graham said, per the Chronicle. Sund said in a letter to Pelosi last month, the former Sergeant at Arms Paul Irving said he was concerned about "the optics" and did not feel the "intelligence supported it".
