U.S. Senator Roger Marshall (R-Kansas), a mentee of Dole's, said "I haven't known a better public servant" and that he expects the longtime senator to meet the challenge as he's done numerous times throughout his life.

"Recently, I was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer", wrote the 97-year-old.

In a tweet, Democratic Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly wished Dole "a swift recovery".

He was soundly defeated by President Bill Clinton in the 1996 presidential election with Dole winning 40.7% of the vote to Clinton's 49.2%. Dole had unsuccessfully sought the GOP nomination in 1980 and 1988, and he was President Gerald Ford's vice presidential running mate in 1976, when Ford lost to Democrat Jimmy Carter.

Dole served as a US senator from Kansas from 1969 to 1996 and also served as both the Senate majority and minority leader during his long career.

Dole suffered serious wounds in Italy during World War II that resulted in a long hospitalization.

In 2018, Congress gave him the Congressional Gold Medal. He earned two Purple Hearts and two Bronze Stars for valor during his service. He remained the Republicans' longest-serving Senate leader, at almost 11 1/2 years, until current Minority Leader Mitch McConnell broke the record in 2018.

Bob Dole campaigns for the U.S. Senate in November 1968.
