Multiple Deaths Reported in Shooting at New Orleans Gun Store

The suspect was also killed during the heated exchange.

A deadly shooting occurred at a gun shop in the New Orleans metro area, "multiple" people are dead and some innocent bystanders wounded as a result of the incident, local news channel WDSU reported Saturday.

"At around 2:50 pm [20:50 GMT] on Saturday, deputies were dispatched to a report of a shooting at Jefferson gun outlet in the 6700 block of Airline Drive".

After the shooter opened fire at the store killing two people, a few people engaged him.

Jefferson Parish Sheriff, Joseph Lopinto, said in a statement that three people were pronounced dead at the scene. Two others were transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Guns and ammunition are sold in the front of the outlet that faces the main thoroughfare through Jefferson Parish.

"We're trying to put it all together, piece it together", Lopinto told AP. The man reportedly got into an argument with a clerk at the store for entering the premises with a loaded gun that was unholstered. Lopinto said the investigation was continuing as authorities tried to determined details of what happened.

Caution tape surrounded the business to keep onlookers from away from the crime scene where ambulances and numerous law enforcement vehicles had arrived earlier.
