In the trial of almost 44,000 volunteers, the level of protection against moderate and severe COVID-19 was 66 per cent in Latin America and 57 per cent in South Africa, where a particularly worrying variant of the novel coronavirus is circulating.
General practitioners and pharmacies have put their hand up to be involved, and there's expected to be pop-up clinics at current COVID-19 testing centres and hospitals.

Health Canada approved the AstraZeneca vaccine for use in people 18 and over, expressing confidence it would work for the elderly even though some countries, including France, have authorized it only for use in people under 65, saying there is not enough evidence it works in older adults. "I'd like to see one that has a higher percentage of (efficacy)".
It will now be up to provinces to determine if they open up vaccinations with Oxford-AstraZeneca to individuals under the age of 65.

Hwang says efficacy between vaccines can not be compared because each involved completely different trials at different time periods, in different countries, with different volunteers of different age groups and varying trial design. It is cheaper and easier to handle than the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, which needs deep-cold storage that is not widespread in many developing nations.
But two million jabs have been ordered from the Serum Institute of India, and Verity Pharmaceuticals, which is facilitating the institute's application in Canada, has said the first 500,000 would reach Canadian shores this week.
Sharma also stressed the similarities between the two shots Friday.
"For all intents and purposes they're the same vaccine", said Sharma.
This weekend, the Food and Drug Administration is expected to grant the emergency use authorization of the one-dose vaccine developed by Johnson & Johnson, making it the third available to the US public.
