A tsunami of 28 centimeters was observed at the North Island, the Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

New Zealand's National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) tweeted: "We are assessing whether the natural disaster has created a tsunami that could affect New Zealand". There was no immediate report of damages.

New Zealand government's seismic monitor Geonet pegged the quake at a magnitude of 7.2 with a depth of 94 km (58 miles).

"Hope everyone is ok out there - especially on the East Coast who would have felt the full force of that quake", she said.

In the minutes following the quake, more than 50,000 people reported feeling it on Geonet.

"Tsunami activity will continue for several hours and the threat must be regarded as real until this warning is canceled", New Zealand's National Emergency Management Agency warned.

The Hawaii-based warning centre said in a 3am update that "tsunami waves had been observed" following the quake.

Officials confirmed the quake could cause coastal flooding on the country's North Island between Cape Runaway and Tolaga Bay.

People near the northeastern coastline have been urged to leave coastal areas immediately and move to higher ground if they felt shaking.

Strong and unusual currents and unpredictable surges near the shore are expected in the following areas.

A magnitude 6.3 quake hit the city of Christchurch in 2011, killing 185 people and destroying much of its downtown.
