The trans-Tasman travel bubble between Australia and New Zealand will reopen from April 19 as both countries continue to enjoy low coronavirus cases.
"Those undertaking travel on either side of the ditch will do so under the guidance of flyer beware", she said.
"We are now able to take this next step and it is a world-first", Ms Ardern said.
The airline hinted potential suspensions to the arrangement, already common to the existing one-way bubble, would add too much "complexity".
Fox Glacier Guiding chief Rob Jewell told Mike Hosking on Newstalk ZB that pre-Covid, Australians made up about 32 per cent of his business.
Both Australia and New Zealand have managed the Covid-19 crisis more successfully than most other developed nations after closing their global borders to non-citizens and permanent residents very early during the pandemic.
It's expected that Air New Zealand will also be reopening their worldwide airport lounges across Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Melbourne, Auckland, Christchurch, and Wellington. Returning New Zealand residents would be required to undergo 14 days in hotel quarantine, at their own expense.
Ms Ardern said there were no conversations about the possibility of a bubble with Singapore and Australia. The planes will also be flown by crew members who have not flown on any high-risk routes for a set period of time. Random temperature checks will be carried out on arriving passengers.
Australians heading to New Zealand will be kept separate from other global arrives who are still required to go into mandatory hotel quarantine for 14 days.
"Our team's success in managing COVID-19 and keeping it out over the past 12 months now opens up the opportunity to reconnect with loved ones and resume Trans-Tasman travel", Ardern said in a news conference. A limited schedule for flights to and from Queenstown will remain available for booking from 18 September 2021.
Qantas, however, is set to ramp up routes between the two countries, in particular between Sydney and Auckland. Announced today by PM Jacinda Ardern, the travel bubble will begin on April 19.
