DART officer Brent Thompson was confirmed to be one of the fatalities in the Dallas police shootings in which 11 officers were shot during protests against police use of excessive force.
During the funeral service at Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano, Texas, fellow officer Debbie Taylor described Ahrens as a "gentle giant" who "strived to be the best, most knowledgeable officer".
Hundreds of law enforcement officers in formal uniforms attended a memorial service at a Dallas megachurch for Dallas Area Rapid Transit officer Brent Thompson at The Potter's House, a Dallas megachurch headed by celebrity Bishop T.D. Jakes.
In addition to a private funeral on Wednesday, a public memorial is scheduled for Thursday at Watermark Church in Dallas. Sgt. Smith will receive another service on Thursday, in the church where he worked as a security guard.
Sam Eichenwald for NewsweekFollowing the memorial service for the fallen officers, a group of city residents gathered beneath the Dallas flag near the fountain outside of City Hall to display "Love one another" in bright pink lettering.
"With Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings and Brown among the mourners, two officers remembered Ahrens, a 48-year-old father of two, for his bravery, friendship and deep dedication".
His girlfriend was in the vehicle and has said that Castile was shot after he told an officer he was armed and had a permit to carry, and was reaching for his ID. "You know, they ran toward the sound of gunfire and did their part to defend freedom it's the least we can do to be here", said Dennis Fitzgerald, Suffolk County, NY Police Officer.
A service began a short time later for for a third officer, Sr. Cpl.
Thompson's wife and colleague, Emily, called the shooter, Micah Johnson - a racist madman who also injured nine other officers and two civilians - a coward.
Smith was an Army veteran who had been on the Dallas police force 28 years. The tragedy has struck close to home and has even prompted Jefferson Park residents to show their support for officers outside a Northwest Side police district.
JetBlue donated round-trip tickets for six members of the honor guard.
The local officers joined thousands for the services for three of the officers killed.
