Overall at Comcast, consolidated revenue for the third quarter increased 14.2 percent to $21.3 billion, including $1.6 billion of revenue generated by the broadcast of the Olympics, of which $1.2 billion is related to advertising revenue.
Wall Street analysts have been eager to hear whether AT&T's $85.4 billion deal to buy Time Warner might prompt Comcast to rush out and buy a wireless phone company such as T-Mobile or Sprint to achieve the same kind of scale.
NBCUniversal CEO Steve Burke has said that the company made over $250 million in Rio as ad sales rose, even though Olympics ratings fell 16 percent in primetime on NBC from the London Olympics. Advertising revenue increased 15.9%.
Comcast announced Wednesday that it gained a net 32,000 cable subscribers last quarter, compared with a loss of 48,000 in the same quarter previous year.
Net income attributable to Comcast grew 12.1 percent to $2.24 billion from a year ago.
Comcast's revenue of $21.31 billion topped analysts' expectations while earnings per share of 92 cents were in line with the high end of estimates for the quarter.
Philadelphia-based Comcast reported business services revenues of $1.40 billion for the third quarter ended September 30, an increase of 15.5 percent from $1.21 billion in the third quarter of 2015.
Comcast Cable CEO Neil Smit added that other operators - particularly Rogers Communications, Telenet and Virgin Media - have used wireless to reduce churn and increase the customer's lifetime value. The numbers also demonstrated Comcast's renewed muscle in the battle against cord-cutting.
Comcast was working on enhancing its X1 internet-connected set-top box to keep pay-TV subscribers.
The company said it did not agree with the Bureau's theory and said the problems were "isolated errors or customer confusion".
Without the Olympics revenue overall, broadcast business was down 3.6% to $1.9 billion.
Comcast's main show - its cable systems - more than held its own with video subscribers increasing by 32,000 to 22.4 million.
The company's Internet/broadband business continues at a faster pace - 8.8% higher in revenue to $3.4 billion. The industry leader also gained 330,000 high-speed Internet customers, a slight increase over the year-earlier quarter. "They are working well together, adding customers, adding new products and real market leadership in nearly every area".
The NBCU's Cable Networks revenues were up 22.0% to $2.94 billion, but that included $432 million fo the Olympics. That's a tough comparison, though, because "Minions" and "Jurassic World" were practically minting money in last year's third quarter. "NBCUniversal reported operating cash flow growth of over 30 percent, benefitting from the Olympics, continued growth at our Theme Parks, and the theatrical success of "The Secret Life of Pets" this quarter".
