Multiple suspects are still at large after firing shots early Sunday morning in a packed nightclub in Cincinnati, a major city in the mid-east US state of OH, leading to one death, one in "extremely critical condition" and another 14 injured, local police said.
The incident took place around 1 a.m. ET at the Cameo nightclub where Cincinnati Police say there was only one shooter.
Located in the city's East End area, Cameo serves a mostly African American clientele if flyers from its Facebook page are indicative of its audience. Cincinnati police originally said that there was only one shooter.
Cincinnati's Police Chief Eliot Isaac said the bar was crowded with approximately a couple hundred people.
"You have innocent people shot, just for going out to have a good time".
The club owners oftentimes hire extra security on the weekends, with Friday night's being for those 18 and older, and Saturday's for the 21 and above crowd.
He called the shootings "unacceptable" and said authorities would work to find ways to prevent such violence.
"At this point it's unclear exactly what instigated the shooting", Captain Kimberly Williams said at a briefing.
She said there was "a lot of chaos when the shots went off". There were also many people who suffered minor injuries while running from the shooting, Cincinnati fire Assistant Chief Roy Winston said at the news conference.
One of the wounded is in an "extremely critical condition", according to police, while two others are critical, according to a hospital spokesman. "Numerous witnesses fled, but everyone that we can identify is being interviewed", said. There were at least two officers who were working at the front entrance of the club and two others that were patrolling the parking lot.
"There were two shootings at the nightclub in 2015: one on New Year's Day, when someone was shot in the foot, and another in September, when a shooting victim was found in the parking lot", noted Cincinnati NBC affiliate WLWT.
According to WCPO, the incident happened at the Cameo nightclub after 2AM. Cameo will remain closed until both our management completes our own investigation and the Cincinnati Police Department completes their investigation.
