For instance, users can now search for topics like "New York Fashion Week" or "kittens" or "kitchen remodeling" to see video Stories that are related to these topics. When Snapping a Story, submit it to Our Story (instead of just your squad on your Snap TL).
"We've built a new way to understand what's happening in Snaps that are submitted to Our Story, and to create new Stories using advanced machine learning", Snapchat explained on its blog. It's essentially a very high-tech way of inspiring a major sense of FOMO in prospective viewers.
This move came after its main rival Facebook introduced its temporal Snapchat-like stories format along with filters on the main mobile app.
Snapchat has been criticized in the past for a lack of user discovery features, but with the new Stories in Search feature and other efforts like universal search, the company is making clear improvements. The company said it developed its new Search feature in-house. The company explained that it chose to introduce search because, "Over time, the number of Snaps that were created by our community and added to Our Story simply overwhelmed our curation team", Snap said in a blog post announcing the feature.
Facebook-owned Instagram and WhatsApp already got "Stories" update before Facebook rolled it out to its users. The product launched back in October 2013, beginning first with My Stories that allowed individual Snapchat users to stitch together individual photos and videos that would last only 24 hours each. Like Snapchat's Stories, Facebook's new offering encourages users to share multiple photos and videos as part of a "visual collection" atop their News Feed. The results have been wonderful: "you can search over one million unique Stories on Snapchat", Snap said in a post.
Currently, Snapchat's search function is only for finding accounts: Users can either select the friends they converse with most, or search by account name for new people to follow. That parity means that revamping search could also help Snapchat pull users' attention away from Facebook.
