It is important to note as well that this large extension is becoming more common practice for PGA TOUR, as they now have worked out 10-year extensions with eight tournaments that will be played each year.
Jay Monahan didn't get to be PGA Tour commissioner without knowing how to hedge bets. The total compensation awarded by FedEx under the bonus structure is $35 million annually, with payouts made through the 150th finisher in the standings.
The FedEx Cup began in 2007 to help give the PGA Tour a dramatic end to its season after the majors are over.
Rory McIlroy is the current FedEx Cup champion, after winning both the Deutsche Bank Championship and Tour Championship to pip Dustin Johnson.
"This significant announcement continues to solidify the TOUR Championship as one of the biggest dates on the sporting calendar", said Martin Stephenson, tournament director of the TOUR Championship.
The initial deal was for six years followed by a five-year extension through this season. The Players could move to March, where it sat originally on the schedule, and the PGA Championship, now the year's final major, could be shifted into May. Because last January, in his first interview as commissioner with the Wall Street Journal, Monahan termed a move to March as "certainly something we would like to see happen".

"I think FedEx has a great deal of confidence that wherever we end up with our schedule on a long-term basis and however we create the FedEx Cup season and the playoffs, all of that will be done in a way that's going to be in the best interest of the Cup and our players", Monahan said.
"... When you look at the young stars of today's PGA Tour", he said, "and the talent that's there, I would say there is no more exciting time about the future of the game based on the players that are rising to the top of the Tour right now - and that isn't any reflection on any past generations or groups of players".
It is, however, the Japan PGA Championship and as such is one of the flagship events of the Japan Golf Tour.
