The phone comes with a BSNL SIM card but the device supports dual-SIMs which means the phone is not only restricted to BSNL's network.
Like the JioPhone, the Bharat 1 is 4G VoLTE enable, however BSNL does not offer 4G VoLTE services as of yet. A couple of weeks ago, Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio also announced their much-awaited 4G VoLTE-enabled feature phone, dubbed as "JioPhone" in India with an "effective price" of Rs. 0 (Zero). The advanced 4G phone has a 2.4-inch display and is powered by a Snapdragon processor.
On the camera front, the device features a 2-megapixel rear camera and 0.3-megapixel front-facing camera. That said if you pay Rs. 2,200, the feature phone will be all yours, and you can use the device with any network, including Reliance Jio.
The handset will also come pre-loaded with additional features like Bharat Interface for Money (BHIM) mobile app. Homegrown telecom operator BSNL plans to tap this market in partnership with Micromax. Connectivity features including 4G VoLTE, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.1 LE, GPS, USB 2.0.
Nevertheless, Micromax and BSNL's Bharat 1 is expected to face tough competition from Reliance Jio and Airtel. "We are confident that Bharat-1 will help millions of users experience data and calling experience like never before", Anupam Srivastava, Chairman and Managing Director, BSNL, said. Both Micromax and BSNL have been working with an aim to bring the next wave of unconnected users on the Internet.
At a media event, which saw Manoj Sinha, minister of communication and Aruna Sundararajan, Secretary to Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology of the Government of India deliver speeches, BSNL executives said they see the launch of Bharat-1 as an opportunity to grow its user base. The feature phone also supports 22 different languages.
"The launch of "Bharat 1", powered by Qualcomm 205 mobile platform will usher a new era by providing access to 4G, VoLTE, payments and new opportunities to millions of users in India", said Larry Paulson, Vice President and President, Qualcomm India.
