In a new indictment, federal prosecutors say Ghislaine Maxwell groomed an approximately 14-year-old girl to be sexually abused by financier and accused pedophile Jeffrey Epstein at his Palm Beach, Florida, mansion beginning in 2001.
In the new indictment, prosecutors with the Southern District of NY allege that Maxwell met Minor Victim-4 at Epstein's Palm Beach residence in 2001 when the latter was approximately 14 years old.
Maxwell is accused of grooming a 14-year-old girl to engage in sexual acts with Epstein from 2001 to 2004.
Earlier this year, Maxwell's lawyers challenged the charges against her, saying they were obtained unjustly and didn't properly allege crimes.
Maxwell has vigorously denied the previous allegations and pleaded not guilty to those charges. Maxwell has also appealed the bail rejections.
Maxwell would normalize inappropriate and abusive conduct by talking about sexual topics in front of the teen girl or by being present in the massage room when the girl was naked.
Prosecutors allege that Maxwell also encouraged the victim "to recruit other young females to provide sexualised massages to Epstein".
She has also said the perjury charges, based on depositions from 2016 in a civil lawsuit, should be tossed because her answers were true, and the grand jury in suburban White Plains, New York, that indicted her had too few nonwhite jurors.
In a letter filed with the court, prosecutors said a grand jury sitting in Manhattan returned the charges.
But the U.S. government also promised not to bring another rewritten indictment against her if lawyers do not request to postpone a trial scheduled for July 12.
"This production will include the statements of more than 250 witnesses related to the investigation of Jeffrey Epstein and his associates in the Government's possession whom the Government does not now expect to call to testify at trial", wrote Audrey Strauss, the United States attorney for the Southern District of NY.
Shortly after the new indictment became public, Maxwell was dealt another setback by District Judge Alison Nathan, who rejected her attempt to seal information already entered into the public record.
She was denied bail for a third time earlier this month and remains in prison in Brooklyn awaiting a trial due to start this summer. An indictment also said Epstein worked with employees and associates to lure the girls to his residences and paid some of his victims to recruit other girls for him to abuse.
Two years ago, federal prosecutors alleged that Epstein ran a sex trafficking enterprise between 2002 and 2005 at his homes in Manhattan and Palm Beach, Florida.
Epstein killed himself at age 66 in a Manhattan jail cell in August 2019 while awaiting trail on sex trafficking charges.
