"Somebody went behind their vehicle to the trunk and then got another gun", he said, adding: "Then I saw one body on the floor".
Cook said officers located eight deceased victims inside the building, plus the alleged gunman who is believed to have died by suicide.
WASHINGTON, April 16 ― Multiple people were shot in an incident today in the USA city of Indianapolis, according to police, although the severity of the victims' injuries was not immediately clear.
The shooter wasn't immediately identified, and investigators were in the process of conducting interviews and gathering information.
The latest rampage unfolded at a FedEx operations centre near the Indianapolis International Airport, after 11 p.m. local time on Thursday night.
"I am heartbroken by the mass shooting at the FedEx facility here in Indianapolis and praying for all affected by this tragedy", Rep. Andre Carson, a Democrat whose district includes much of the city, tweeted.
It is unclear how many people have been shot at this time or all their conditions, but multiple victims have been transported to various hospitals in the area, Cook said. Five people, including a pregnant woman, were shot and killed in January, and a man was accused of killing three adults and a child before abducting his daughter during an argument at a home in March. Less than a week later, 10 people were killed when a gunman opened fire at a grocery store in Boulder, Colo.
Local media cited a company spokesman as saying that FedEx is now considering reevaluating a policy that prohibits employees from having their phones with them during shifts, making it hard to contact them. "They came in they went in and they did their job".
