The province confirms another 2,862 cases of the B.1.1.7 variant, 30 additional cases of the P.1 variant first detected in Brazil and eight additional cases of the B.1351 variant first detected in South Africa.
Canada is receiving a shipment of one million Moderna doses on Wednesday, a week earlier than expected.
"Today, we are adding pregnant persons 16 and older to those who are eligible to book their vaccine", provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix said in a statement Tuesday. It's not known when more doses of AstraZeneca will arrive and a fourth approved vaccine from Johnson & Johnson has arrived in Canada but is not yet being distributed over concerns it may be tainted.
According to the province, 132,603 of those doses were administered in the last 24-hour period. An estimated 90 per cent of appointments were booked that day by people between the ages of 18 and 44.
The majority of Wednesday's cases can be located within the Greater Toronto Area.
In other vaccine news, as of May 4, the province said more than 92 per cent of Ontario residents aged 80 and over and 90 per cent of residents aged 75 to 79 having received at least one dose. She also said there's evidence that breast-feeding mothers would benefit from the vaccine as the antibodies transfer to the infant to provide protection. "These mobile units are created to be rapidly deployed to a diversity of small to medium-sized workplaces and will help strengthen our capacity to reach areas where the need is greatest".
Maple Leaf Foods in Peel Region successfully offered 620 doses to employees between April 28 and April 30 and a clinic is now in progress at Maple Lodge Farms in Peel, where 930 doses have been administered to date.
