But while speaking to reporters at a COVID-19 briefing on Tuesday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Canadians should have no qualms about receiving a dose of the AstraZeneca product - and with the country in the middle of a third wave, he stressed it's prudent for people to get the first shot offered to them to help drive down case counts and hospitalizations. "This was following an AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccination, and the person is a woman in their 40s, and she is stable and now receiving treatment in hospital and Vancouver Coastal Health".
She encouraged anyone who has received AstraZeneca - or any of the available vaccines - and is feeling unwell to call 811 and talk to a healthcare provider. The current jabs are modelled on the Wuhan variant which is no longer dominant.
"'From time to time, as people booked on, they would find they would have to wait a few days or a few weeks to get the appointments they want", she said.
The COVAX vaccine supply situation is likely to improve significantly in the second half of 2021 as more vaccines are likely to be secured by the World Health Organization and EUA, including Chinese vaccines, he said, adding that COVAX has assured Pakistan of providing at least 100,000 doses of mRNA vaccines of Pfizer BioNtech by June this year.
"I am confident that they have done the right thing to protect themselves, and our community".
And one United Kingdom scientist said that for most people the probability of surviving the year is "much greater for people who accept any vaccine when offered than if they decline it".
"Around 1,238,000 doses of Oxford-AstraZeneca'sCOVID-19 vaccine (Covishield) are arriving on May 8 at the Islamabad Airport".
There are 457 people hospitalized with the virus, including 154 who are in the ICU.
Dr. Fahad Razak, a general internist who treats COVID-19 patients at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto, said NACI's communication of its advice was more problematic than the advice itself.
"We have to maintain the pace and scale of the United Kingdom vaccination program", Van-Tam said, noting that the AstraZeneca vaccine is safe and effective and "thousands are alive today" because they received it.
Razak said all the vaccines approved in Canada, including AstraZeneca, are good vaccines to take. Three women have died.
Today's decision to restrict use of the AstraZeneca vaccine to the over-40s isn't because the risk of the vaccine in that age group has gone up - it's because the risk of them getting Covid-19 has gone way down.
