The first man to get the COVID-19 vaccine outside of a clinical trial has shuffled off this mortal coil.
Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix announced Thursday that B.C.is now recommending an eight-week gap between shots, down from the 16 weeks previously announced.
The Phase 2/3 trial included 3,732 participants, two-thirds of whom received two doses of the Moderna vaccine while the others received a placebo.
"We are examining the request (for indemnity) and we will take a decision in the larger interest of people and on merit".
Shakespeare, an 81-year-old former worker at Rolls-Royce and parish councillor, got the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID jab in December at University Hospital Coventry shortly after 91-year-old Margaret Keenan, the first person in the world to get vaccinated against the coronavirus. "It ensures that you have maximum protection for the maximum amount of time".
According to the ministry of health and family welfare (MoHFW) data, cumulative Covid-19 vaccines were at 20,06,62,456 with 15,71,49,593 first dose and 4,35,12,863 second dose of the vaccine. Seniors, Indigenous people, and people who identify as Clinically Extremely Vulnerable (CEV) will be prioritized, with invitations already going out to those who are eligible.
Second doses will be prioritized and given similar to the first doses.
Another complicating factor, however, surrounds those who received AstraZeneca vaccines.
"Moderna has indicated that it will continue to ramp up its deliveries in the second part of June with millions of additional doses to be delivered", Anand said, promising "further updates" about coming shipments once they are confirmed.
Providing data, it said UK's Public Health England (PHE) has reported high vaccine effectiveness (87.9%) against the B.1.617.2 variant, most reported in India, in an observational study (concluded on May 22, 2021). "We are prioritizing the supplies of Moderna that we have right now to be able to make sure that when we do communities that have received Moderna for their first dose, they can receive it for their second dose".
